Summer Wedding Survival Tips

Gloria Kreitzberg // Marketing Director

Sunshine streaming through the window of a church or through the leaves of a tree on your wedding day…balmy nights with a warm gentle breeze that sends the fragrances of flowers that have closed their petals for the night…ahhh. Sounds like a wonderful romantic backdrop for your summer wedding day. It can be—but there are also some practical aspects of a summer wedding that you will need to consider. You will need to think about how to keep everyone comfortable in scorching sunshine, or prevent pesky bugs from taking a bite out of your wedding bliss. Here are our survival tips to keep everyone comfortable on your special day.

What to Wear

For the Women

  • Bridal gowns that are lightweight, sleeveless, shorter, or have tasteful cutouts in the design will keep the bride from overheating.
  • Use a soft color palette with breezy light materials for the bridesmaids’ dresses (preferably with spaghetti straps or sleeveless).
  • Opt for cocktail length dresses to keep the ladies in your wedding party cool.
  • Open-toed flats or embellished flip-flops will keep feet from overheating and allow the ladies to dance the night away in cool comfort.
  • Wearing a makeup fixative is a great way to keep everyone looking beautiful or opt for airbrush makeup which will stay on longer.
  • Wear a hairstyle that keeps your locks off of your neck and forehead.

For the Men

  • Keep tuxes lightweight with sun reflective lighter colors.
  • For a casual summer theme, dress your men in easy-breezy lightweight button-down shirts and skip the jacket or tux.
  • To keep things really casual, have the groom and the groomsmen wear shorts that match the bridesmaids' dresses (with the groom standing out in all white).

Food and Libations

Cool off with some cucumber water
Did you know that it's been proven that cucumbers can reduce your body temperature by at least three degrees? According to Afeisha James-Kipps, cofounder of Wedspire, it's true! She recommends sipping on some cucumber water infused with mint leaves to cool off and stay refreshed while you get ready.

  • Fresh lemonade and tropical drinks are a must.
  • Serve guests cucumber water, which has been proven to reduce boy heat by at least three degrees.
  • Serve a trendy ‘naked’ wedding cake to avoid melting icing and sliding layers.
  • Offer fruit tarts or strawberry shortcake instead of a traditional cake.
  • Serve fruit juice popsicles for a refreshing treat while guests are socializing before your reception. Renting an ice cream cart is also another idea.
  • Hire several ice cream trucks to drive up to your reception venue for a fun dessert experience.
  • Have a do-it-yourself s’mores station to bring back pleasant summer memories of childhood (or adulthood for that matter).

For the Ceremony

  • Provide parasols for your guests to shade themselves during the ceremony and fans on each chair to cool them off.
  • For an outdoor ceremony, have bottled water in a large container at the entrance.
  • Make uncomfortable folding chairs soft and comfy for guests by adding a throw pillow to the back of each chair—color coordinated with your wedding theme.

For the Reception

  • Use floating candles in glass containers for your centerpieces instead of flowers than can wilt in hot weather.
  • For outdoor receptions, set up a large table as a RELIEF STATION for your guests with cool drinks or water, bug repellent, cold (moistened) rolled up towels, sunscreen in pretty containers, flip flops, and fans.

Refreshing Photo Ops

  • Visit a marina before the reception and capture wind-blown photos while the cool breeze keeps you comfortable.
  • Head to the beach with cool breezes for casual photos, where going barefoot in the sand is perfectly acceptable.

The Venue

Although outdoor weddings and receptions are wonderful, getting rained out is not. If you have not rented large tents in case of inclement weather, select a wedding venue with both indoor and outdoor options and a ‘plan B’ ready and waiting is a good idea.
